Epipremnum aureum
Golden Pothos

WaterWhen the soil is dry an inch down — roughly weekly. The leaves curl slightly when it's thirsty, so it tells you.
LightMedium to bright indirect. More light brings out more of the gold variegation; it tolerates low light but grows slower.
CareTrim leggy vines to keep it full, and root the cuttings in water — endlessly shareable. Wipe the leaves occasionally to keep them glossy.
The pothos is the plant that taught me I could actually keep things alive. Four years ago it was a small grocery-store pot of four sad vines; now it trails several feet down from its hanging spot by the window, and every cutting I’ve ever rooted came from it — so pieces of this one plant live in half the homes on my street. It asks for almost nothing and forgives everything, which is exactly why I recommend it to anyone convinced they have a black thumb.
