Buxus sempervirens
Boxwood

WaterModerate and even. Established plants are fairly drought-tolerant, but don’t let them bake.
LightFull sun to part shade — very adaptable.
CareShear once or twice in the growing season to keep the form. Give them airflow to avoid blight.
The boxwoods are the grown-ups in the room. It takes years of light, regular shearing to coax them into these clean spheres, and at six or seven years old mine finally read as deliberate rather than shrubby. They do the unglamorous work of structure — the dark, solid forms that make the loose perennials around them look intentional, and the green that keeps the garden from looking empty in January.
