Astilbe earns its keep by blooming in the difficult places — the damp, shaded pockets where sun-lovers refuse. After three or four seasons mine have bulked into generous clumps of those soft pink plumes, and even once the flowers brown out, the deeply cut foliage carries the corner. The one rule: never let them dry out. They’re the first plant to tell me, dramatically, when the bed needs water.
